Online whiteboard for maths tutoring
No more camera pointed at a notebook and guessing at blurry handwriting. You explain, the student works next to you, and you both look at the same board.
Free, with no subscription and no per-student fees - even when maths tutoring is how you earn.
No fees, no card
Runs in the browser
No limits on boards or people
The same hour, two different lessons
Most online lessons run on a video call and a sheet of paper under the camera. Here is what changes when you share a board instead.
A video call alone
Camera aimed at a notebook, formulas to be deciphered from handwriting
The student watches and listens but does not solve - mistakes surface at the test
Graphs are sketched by hand or shown as a ready-made picture
Exercises from a worksheet have to be copied out or read aloud
All that is left afterwards is a photo of a notebook, if anyone took one
Tools for lessons usually come with a subscription, often priced per student
A lesson on the PhiBoard whiteboard
Clean, identical notation on both sides of the lesson
The student solves along with you, at the same time, on the same board. You can use voice chat too
Graphs are plotted from the formula you type and can be moved and rescaled
Upload a PDF worksheet and solve the exercises directly on it
The board stays after the lesson and the whole session exports to PDF
Free - no subscription, no student limits and no fees for boards
What it gives a tutor
You work at the same time
You and your student can write on the board simultaneously, with no handing over control. You see every step, not just the answer.
Formulas as in a textbook
Fractions, roots, powers and indices go through the formula editor, so the notation stays readable even with a mouse.
Graphs from a formula
Type a function and the graph appears on the board. Change the axis range and compare several functions side by side.
Worksheets on the board
Upload a PDF exercise or a photo of a notebook page and solve on it, instead of copying the text out.
Voice chat on the board
The microphone is part of the board, so you do not need a separate app next to it. The feature is in testing and works on computers.
Notes stay with the student
After the lesson you save the board and it does not disappear. The student comes back to it while doing homework, and you can see where you left off.
What kind of lessons it suits
One board covers every setup in which maths tutoring online usually happens.
One-to-one lessons
The usual setup: you explain and see immediately which step the student gets stuck on.
Small group lessons
Several people work on one board at once. There are no fees based on the number of participants.
Exam revision
Prepare a board with a set of exercises once and clone it for the next student.
Short consultations
One exercise, fifteen minutes: send a link, the student joins from a browser and you start.
How an online lesson runs
Send a link for the lesson
The student opens the board in a browser, on a computer, phone or tablet. Nothing to install.
Explain by drawing
A graph, a figure or a worked formula appears in front of the student step by step, not as a finished picture.
Leave the student a record
After the lesson export the board to PDF or leave it shared, so the student can come back to it.
Why PhiBoard is the best choice for online tutoring
Maths cannot be taught by voice alone. The student has to see an expression change step by step and then try the next transformation themselves. A plain video call does not offer that: it shows a face and a notebook, but no shared place to work. On our online whiteboard you have a set of modern maths tools at hand: formulas and graphs generated for you, solids and figures ready to drop in. There is also voice chat, so the whole lesson can run inside a single app.
And then there is what matters over a longer collaboration: the lesson can be saved and nothing from it gets lost. Export the board to PDF or leave it shared by link, the student returns to it while doing homework, and before the next lesson you can see where you finished. PhiBoard is free while doing all of this - no subscription, no student limits and no fees for boards, including when you tutor for a living.
PhiBoard is not just an app to us. It was built in Poland out of a belief that good tools for learning maths should be available to everyone - whether you teach at school, tutor privately or simply want to understand something the evening before a test. That is why the board is free, why we keep growing a knowledge base of lessons and materials, and why every new feature is there to bring maths closer to people.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a tablet with a stylus?
No, although a stylus helps a lot with freehand sketches. A mouse is enough to draw figures and type formulas in the editor, and graphs are plotted from the formula itself.
Does the student need an account?
A link is enough to work together on a shared board. An account is worth creating if the student wants their own boards, access to past lessons and the knowledge base between sessions.
How many people can work on one board?
The board works for one-to-one lessons and for small groups alike. There are no fees based on the number of participants and no limit on boards.
Can I use it for paid tutoring?
Yes. PhiBoard is free to use even when you teach for a living. There is no subscription and no commission.
Does the board work on a phone and a tablet?
Yes. It runs in the browser on any device, and there are dedicated apps for iPhone, iPad and Android on the App Store and Google Play.
Can I send the student a record of the lesson?
Yes. Export the board to PDF or leave it shared by link, so the student can return to it whenever they want.
